Chupa Chups Receives SBTi Validation for Emissions Targets

In a significant move towards combating climate change, Perfetti Van Melle, the parent company of iconic candy brand Chupa Chups, has obtained validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its near-term greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions reduction targets.

The approval underscores Perfetti Van Melle’s commitment to aligning its sustainability efforts with global climate objectives. The company’s near-term targets for 2030 have been deemed consistent with the level of decarbonization necessary to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C compared to pre-industrial levels, as outlined by the United Nations.

Andrew Boyd, Chief Sustainability Officer at Perfetti Van Melle, emphasized the urgency of action in addressing climate change, stating, “Limiting global temperature rise to 1.5°C is still possible, but we are dangerously close to that threshold. That’s why businesses must act with urgency to reduce carbon emissions at scale.”

Perfetti Van Melle’s targets aim to achieve a 42% reduction in scope 1 and scope 2 GHG emissions by 2030, relative to a 2021 baseline. These emissions encompass the company’s own operations, including both industrial and non-industrial sites.

Additionally, the company is targeting a 25% reduction in scope 3 emissions within the same timeframe. Scope 3 emissions include those associated with purchased goods and services, upstream transportation and distribution, business travel, waste generated in operations, and end-of-life treatment of products.

In addition to its GHG emissions targets, Perfetti Van Melle’s Forest, Land, and Agriculture (FLAG) targets have also received evaluation and approval from the SBTi. Under this absolute target, the company aims to reduce FLAG GHG emissions by 30.3% under scope 3 by 2030, relative to a 2021 baseline.

Perfetti Van Melle’s validation by the SBTi places it among a select group of companies committed to ambitious climate action. Other recent recipients of SBTi approval include the Co-op and N Brown.

This validation underscores Perfetti Van Melle’s leadership in sustainability and its dedication to mitigating its environmental impact in line with global climate goals.
